Role Description

My Work 

I will be an engaged professional when leading the operations of the library.  I will ensure the library develops strong community partnerships, attracts and retains customers by maintaining a suitable collection of materials for all applicable age groups and frequently working the reference desk to answer customer and associate questions.  I recognize my role may extend into the youth services of the library and I must have broad knowledge regarding the youth program needs and wants.  I must be creative when developing programs and promoting our services to the community as I must entice them to participate.  Furthermore, I recognize the importance of maintaining an up to date collection of library materials to attract youth and retain adult customers.  As a resource within the library, I will maintain a positive attitude and guide all customers who need assistance to ensure the best experience possible.

My Positional Role 

In cooperation with the Branch Experience Manager and other colleagues, I will advance the Library's mission, vision, strategic priorities and brand by: 

  • Being a curious and engaged learner.
  • Sharing my ideas.
  • Assisting with the supervision of staff and operation; acting as the branch manager in their absence; assisting with planning and facilitating the budget.
  • Working the reference desk; taking and responding to staff or customer inquiries relating to programming, collections or general library information.
  • Planning for and facilitating various programming and tours relating to branch needs.
  • Preparing, updating and presenting various usage and programming statistics.
  • Maintaining the collection; weeding and recommending items to purchase or replace.
  • Participating in outreach activities to build strong community and business partnerships.
  • Actively participating in leading various meetings, programs, committees or conferences as a representative and member of the library.
  • Developing, planning, promoting, supervising and executing internal and external youth or adult programs.
  • Providing full management of the youth or adult services area of the branch library as assigned.
  • Participating in special projects, or other duties as assigned. 

What I Need to Know to Be Successful 

I need to have a Master's degree from a school of library or information science program accredited by the American Library Association and considerable experience in public library with some supervisory experience. 

I need a valid driver's license.

What I Need to Know About the Physical Requirements 

My work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and pushing or pulling; work requires close vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
