Librarian of Practice

Role Description

 

Community History and Research Librarian

The Community History and Research Librarian of Practice researches, engages in, and explores the histories of the peoples, places, and ideas that shaped our community and its cultures.

  

My Work

I will become actively involved in my area of practice as a curious and learning individual, while being a supportive and practicing professional librarian supporting my colleagues and library users. I will be active and involved with developing and maintaining collections of all kinds within my practice and system-wide. My sense of community and community activism will lead me to attend meetings of partner organizations, actively participate in community events, and provide support and knowledge to all my partners. My sense of wonder and curiosity will propel me to explore and experiment with events, exhibits and diverse ways of connecting people to ideas, information and each other both in the library and community. I advocate for a library that is open to all. I recognize that human beings are human and can be difficult, but I manage with confidence and calm. After all it is just part of a day designed to delight. I will work at all points of service, though I generally will do my work in an area that best suits my talents and aptitudes.

As a Librarian of Practice I will develop an area of practice, as identified or assigned, based upon present and future community needs, resources, staff expertise and innovative practices related to the practice area and library and information science. My area of practice will be ever evolving and changing. Attached is a statement of vision/purpose of what I believe my work to be within my area of practice.

My Positional Role

I will work collaboratively with Library Experience Supervisors and other colleagues to advance the Library's mission, vision, strategic priorities and brand through:

  • Being actively involved in community/civic engagement in my area of practice but also in support of my community of LOPs and the Library.
  • Identifying and cultivating regional or local community relationships that advance my area of practice and the mission, vision and/or strategic initiatives of the library system.
  • Curating, managing and creating content (experiences, programs, services and materials) with colleagues, customers and partner agencies to support area of practice outcomes, create community impact and generate community capital.
  • Coordinating and/or providing professional consultation or instruction within my practice area and/or library and information science to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Effectively manage library and community resources, including but not limited to monetary resources, volunteers, materials, space, human capital and time.
  • Understanding the importance of assessment and evaluation, and developing and applying, in collaboration with the Impact Team and Engagement & Experience Team, assessment and evaluation methods and protocols to demonstrate the impact of my work.
  • Directing, facilitating in-person, telephone or virtual customer interactions at designated service points in and outside of library facilities, in collaboration with colleagues, to ensure a delightful experience.
  • Actively lead or participate in group or individual projects related to my area of practice, or in support of others areas of practice, understand and use the basics of project management in cooperation with Project Management Strategist.
  • Participate in other duties as assigned.

Purpose and Vision of My Work

With my work, I seek to identify new and little understood areas of community history and bring this history to the attention of scholars, history seekers, and the general public. Traditional history, particularly local history, tends to overlook the experiences and contribution of historically marginalized groups. One facet of my inquiry, I will seek to identify these deficits in our collected histories, with the goal of better collecting and preserving their stories. My inquiry seeks to provide crucial historical context for ongoing political, cultural, and social issues under debate, both locally and nationally.

I seek to promote our community's collected histories to relevant stakeholders and history seekers. I seek to provide a point of service for historians, researchers, students, and other knowledge seekers. I seek to share and collect knowledge with these history stakeholders and facilitate their research and works. As one facet of my inquiry, I will collect data and study research requests and questions. This inquiry seeks to improve our collections and curation of historic materials and how we can better our outreach and services to these stakeholders.

To accomplish these goals, my work will include engaging with other historians, archives, museums, and historical societies. My inquiry seeks to expand the understanding of community history and works to create histories, exhibits, and other opportunities for historical engagement for all in our community. 

What I Need to Know to Be Successful 

I need to have a Master's degree from a school of library and/or information science program accredited by the American Library Association, and moderate experience working in a library and/or within the area of practice assigned.

I understand that if I have related education and experience, the Library may consider me for the position if I commit to obtaining my Master's degree as described within three years of starting my work.

I need to obtain and maintain through professional development credits Indiana State Library professional librarian accreditation.

I need a valid driver's license.

What I Need to Know About the Physical Requirements

My work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling; work requires close vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
